Ref Number 457

A typical catalan country house, the "Mas de las Guilles" was the family home of an award-winning boulangere. The boulangerie is still next door, 50 metres away, and is open every day in the summer from 8am until 8pm selling everything from fresh breads, cakes & fruit tarts to savoury breads and pizza (ideal for picnics or snacks on the beach or by the pool).

The house, which stands in 6000m2 of gardens surrounded by mature trees (including fig, almond, lemon, orange & clementines trees), now belongs to retired chef and restaurateur Kevin & Maggie, who have lovingly renovated 3 bedrooms in their house to let as bed & breakfast accommodation and a garden house and annexe for self-catering holidays.
Accommodation

La petite maison du jardin (sleeps 2), as its name suggests, is a little garden house and comprises one room which doubles up as a living room and bedroom. There is a comfortable double bed (190cm x140cm), a separate shower-room with WC and basin and its own barbecue and outside seating area. The kitchenette has a 2-ringed gas hob, a combined grill/oven, a sink, a refrigerator/freezer and a pine table and 2 chairs.
The 2-bedroomed apartment (sleeps 4) is an annexe within the owner’s residence and comprises a room with French doors which opens out onto a communal courtyard. This room has a comfortable sofa which easily converts into a double bed, a kitchen with a double gas hob, a large refrigerator with a separate 3-star freezer, a combined microwave/oven and a table with chairs for dining. It leads through to a small room with adult-sized bunk-beds. There is a 2nd bedroom with a double bed and a large built-in wardrobe . The bedrooms have a window in each which have views of a palm tree, bamboo, and citrus and conifer trees. There is a separate luxury shower-room with WC and basin. The apartment has its own outside seating area with table, chairs and a parasol and has shared use of a gas-fired barbecue. In summer ventilators are provided and there are radiators in each room (oil-fired central heating was installed 3 years ago). Rates for long-term lets are negotiable.
There are swings in the garden around the back of the house and plenty of room for light ball games for those who feel energetic, and sun-loungers under the mulberry trees for those who have just come for a relaxing break or holiday, and for those who need to cool off after a long hot day there is a 10mx5m pool with shower which is shared with the owners. All linen and towels are supplied (including pool/beach towels).
Intensive weekly language, wine & gastronomy courses are available locally in February, April, May/June. For more information please see http://roussilangues.com

The Area

Mas de las Guilles is situated amongst vineyards a 20 minute walk away from the village of Espira de l’Agly with it’s wineries. Rivesaltes (5 minutes away in the car) has a very helpful tourist office where they can provide walking maps. There is a market every Monday morning where you can buy fruit & vegetables, cheese, bread, summer clothing, fresh eggs and even live chickens and geese. From July through to October, there are various fetes(fairs), festivals and live entertainment in Perpignan and the surrounding villages and towns.

For eating out, Perpignan is full of restaurants which range from typically French bistros and brasseries to rather smart, upmarket restaurants where the chefs tend to be more adventurous - so lots to choose from depending on your mood and budget. If you prefer not to drive too far for dinner, Rivesaltes has 4 restaurants or, if one evening you would rather not drive at all, Kevin & Maggie are offering a 3/4-course meal with wines for 37.50 Euros per person (they are offering to cook dinner for guests one night a week and require at least 24 hours notice so that they can go to the markets in Perpignan). For those who love oysters, cured ham and a glass or two of dry white wine, Kevin will gladly take guests to his favourite watering hole in Perpignan.
This is an ideal base from which to explore the vineyards of the Languedoc Roussillon and the peaceful villages in the mountains. A mere 20 minutes drive and you will arrive at the coast with its miles and miles of sandy beaches and another 20 minutes drive down the coast road you will find, nestled in a bay, on the Cote Vermeille, the old and very picturesque port of Collioure where Picasso, Dali, Maillol and others got their inspiration. It takes 35 minutes to get to the Spanish border and 1 hour to Carcassonne.
